Having worked on over 3,500 different Minimates, it’s nearly impossible to pick a single favorite, or even create a list of my top ten or twenty-five, but the ones I’ve always enjoyed designing the most are those that were multiple figures in one.  This was especially fun when they transformed into entirely different characters.  That kind of versatility is where the format really shines.
With dozens of variations already out there based on the classic red-and-blue suit, creating a new version of Spider-Man that would genuinely stand out is always a challenge.  The goal with this design was to go beyond the usual Peter Parker head swap and offer something more transformative.  With just a few extra pieces, this figure could fully convert between Spider-Man and Peter Parker, making it a truly unique figure that was both super hero and civilian.
The Chameleon's design naturally lent itself to another unique transformation feature.  By adding a hair piece, swapping out the arms, and removing his housecoat, Chameleon could convincingly transform into Mary Jane Watson, making a dual-purpose figure that most other toy lines wouldn’t be able to pull off.  Not only was it a way to offer two characters in one, but it showcased the Chameleon's ability to disguise himself as well.  It was a fun opportunity to take advantage of the modular format in an unexpected way.
This kind of flexibility appealed not only to collectors who often picked up an extra figure to display both forms side by side, but also to kids who were drawn to the fun of transforming the figure back and forth as part of the play pattern.
